SANDRA EMMANUEL

President at Rotaract Club of Perth

Awarded a AIM WA + UWA Executive Education Scholarship for the Strategic Social Media Course, 2019

What sort of work does your organisation do?

Rotaract is the younger division of Rotary and is a volunteer-led community group made up of people aged between 18 and 30. We raise funds for a number of charities and also volunteer a large number of hours for charitable purposes.

Describe a typical day's work.

Some of my activities include organising fundraising events, coordinating volunteer activities, promoting the club and recruiting members. This is all done on a voluntary basis and on top of my full-time job.

What were some of the key learnings from the course?

Some key learnings for me were that social media is not to be used as a standalone marketing tool but must be integrated in various other aspects of marketing like SEO, websites and other communications channel. We also learned how to identify personas and to better understand our audience.

How has it impacted / changed / benefited your role and your organisation as a whole?

It has helped me to design better communication strategies to make sure we can recruit more members and volunteers and enhance our social media presence to sell tickets to our charity events and raise awareness about the great work that we are doing in the community.

How did you come to be working in the not-for-profit sector?

I worked for a few years in NFP and now work for a University. However, my passion lies in helping others, so volunteering is central to my life and Rotaract has been a huge part of my life for the last 7 years. I enjoy being able to raise funds for small grassroots charity and getting involved in various volunteering opportunities.

What do you feel is most needed to sustain and build the impact of the not-for-profit sector?

Building skills and retaining staff are always challenges in NFP as budgets are often limited. There might be some value in consolidating organisations that work towards the same purpose so resources can be pooled together and organisations can have a bigger impact.

What is something interesting / unique / unusual about you?

I am from Mauritius, a small multicultural island in the Indian Ocean that was the only home to the Dodo before it became extinct.
