Happy 200th Birthday to Australia’s Oldest Charity – The Benevolent Society

Wednesday 8th May marks the 200th birthday of Australia’s oldest charity, The Benevolent Society - an incredible milestone for an organisation that has done, and continues to do, so much in the lives of everyday Australians. The Benevolent Society is a not-for-profit organisation that works in partnership with other organisations to improve the well-being of children, young people, families and older Australians, especially in disadvantaged communities.

The founders of The Benevolent Society were, “a small group of visionary people who established the first home-grown philanthropy and volunteering in Australia,” says CEO Anne Hollands.

“Imagine an Australia without free legal aid, child protection laws, the old age pension or maternity care and you’ve just imagined Australia without The Benevolent Society,” she says.

The Benevolent Society is also responsible for Social Leadership Australia, a specialist leadership centre working to develop leadership capability with purpose. ASF, with the assistance of the Origin Foundation, is proud to partner with The Benevolent Society for scholarships to attend its Social Leadership Program.

Congratulations to The Benevolent Society for 200 years of helping Australians!
